Welcome to Anne-Clare the owner of Cotton Twist who creates gorgeous crafts kits, gifts and fabulous items for parties. So many lovely things! Today she shares more about her wonderful business and why she started.
1) Why did you start your business?
I used to work in a small business before setting up on my own. This gave me a good insight into life within a small business. Before having my third child, I decided that my final maternity leave would be the ideal time to take the plunge. I wanted to be my own boss and have the flexibility to be around for the kids without having to ask a manager and feel guilty. Deep down, I think I’ve always wanted to run my own business and it was just a matter of time.
2) What do you love about running your own independent business?
I absolutely love the ability to mix my creative skills alongside my business skills. I live for my creative days out of the office, yet I love getting organised and working through my lists on my office days. I love being able to make changes without endless meetings. I love seeing the orders going out and get a kick out of good feedback and interaction on social media.
3) What is your favourite product or service and why?
Product wise, this is difficult as I have so many products…! I think I’m currently most proud of the gift range. It was a true labour of love to get the box made to the specifications for all of our components, and it’s been a real asset to the business. It gives us the ability to market to clients other than those organising parties which was our original target market when we launched. I know you asked for one product, but some of the designs on the keepsake tins make me smile, and one of my favourite ranges is my Easter range. I’ll stop now!
4) Let’s spread the indie love, name some other independent businesses you support.
It’s been wonderful meeting other independent businesses on Instagram. Some of the ones I love:
Jack & Freda – for the most wonderful jewellery, tassel colours to die for.
Thea Chops Books – incredible books to empower children. We recently did our Emmeline Pankhurst collaboration.
Konoc designs – the cleanest lines in leather accessories – love!!
Artisanne Home – handwoven fair trade baskets. Beautiful, ethical & the company employs over 70 people in Senegal
5) Which is your favourite social media platform and why?
This is tricky for me – I love Instagram as it’s visual and enables connections between other businesses, but it can sometimes make me feel inadequate (stupid I know) .. However, I’m also a Pinterest addict as it’s also so visual, but more anonymous & relaxing.
