A big welcome to Paula from Paula Massey Photography – the next wonderful independent business in my series of interviews with #incredibleindependents. She is an amazing local photographer based in Kingston. Today she shares more about why she started her business.
1) Why did you start your business?
I’ve owned a camera since I was very young but I got the photography ‘bug’ when friends asked me to take photos as a second to the photographer at their wedding 15 years ago. This was still in the day of film and needless to say that was it, I was hooked. I’ve since found my own style for the type of photography I have often admired in others and after having my family, a break from my previous career in marketing and obtaining relevant photographic qualifications it made sense to take advantage of the flexibility of working for myself and doing something I love. I set up Paula Massey Photography 4 years ago.
2) What do you love about running your own independent business?
As a personal brand and lifestyle photographer the majority of my clients are running independent businesses too and I love that I’m offering a service to enhance someone elses brand whther it be people or product. I also love working with people and putting them at ease in front of the camera, which are as important as the outcome of the shoot and final edit.
3) What is your favourite product or service and why?
My favourite service I offer is my Brand Portfolio package. This Personal Branding Photography package is for people looking to really enhance their brand visually. They come away with a portfolio of photos which represent themselves and their business which in turn they can roll out over their social media campaigns or on their website. I shoot a series of photos over 3-4 hours in up to 3 locations.
4) Let’s spread the indie love, name some other independent businesses you support.
This could be quite a list as there are so many out there! Particular local favourites include:
5) Which is your favourite social media platform and why?
Social media was a slow burn for me but I’d have to say Instagram is my favourite. I’m continually inspired by what others post whether it be by photographers, artists or business owners.
Instagram has also led me to once again enjoy different genres of photography that are not my core business such as landscapes, nature and black and white documentary. It’s helped me to get back into what I loved about photography in the first place.
A big thank you to Paula for sharing more about her business. Do go and check her work out! Please continue to support her and all the other #incredibleindependents out there. Remember independent businesses really appreciate your business, however small! Thank you for supporting the #incredibleindependents!
