1) Why did you start your business?
I started my business because I needed a creative outlet. I was working from home in a job that saw me sitting at my computer for all the hours that my 3 young children were at school and nursery. I felt worn down by the work I was doing and knew I needed a change. I had made candles when I was younger and my favourite early memories are making them in moulds with my dad, and blowing out candles on birthday cakes! I was often dissatisfied with the scented candles I treated myself to, and on impulse I roped a friend into giving candle making a go with me! We figured if no one bought them we’d at least have lots of birthday presents ready! We invested £75 in equipment and started making candles from our kitchen tables.
2) What do you love about running your own independent business?
After a year I took on the running of Cucumber Wood Candles on my own, and I love everything about running my own small business. Creating new blends and new products and designing my branding has been fantastic. But even more than that I’ve loved building a community, creating a wonderful network of stockists, suppliers and customers. Some I’ve never met, for example through Instagram, but feel like friends, and I love doing local deliveries to catch up with stockists for a chat and catch up. I’m also part of a fabulous local group @TheCreativeDuck who have been so supportive to me, I fact I don’t think I’d be where I am without them.
3) What is your favourite product or service and why?
My favourite product is my best selling Bergamot, Peppermint & Geranium candle, like all my other candles it is purely soy wax and essential oils, and it is the most refreshing blend ever!
4) Let’s spread the indie love, name some other independent businesses you support.
I’m lucky enough to have got to know some fabulous independent businesses, its so hard to narrow it down! @tinyartandcraftgallery and @robinsnestgalleryuk are vibrant galleries selling lovely artisan products. @emmabenz_art, @annie_brougham_illustration, @aimee.hocking.london, @hannahceramics, @hannah_elizabeth_design and @tonder_and_tonder are all wonderful!
5) Which is your favourite social media platform and why?
My favourite social media platform has to be Instagram. Its such a supportive, inspirational and friendly place to showcase my candles and to keep up with other makers and creative people.
