Welcome to Charlotte Salaman and Michael Pearson, husband and wife owners at the Wych Elm pub.
A little background info for you from Charlotte at the Wych Elm: We are tenants at the Wych which means we pay our rent and sell Fuller’s beer, then everything else is entirely up to us as independent owner-operators.
1) Why did you start your business?
Combined we both had careers in hospitality, marketing and design, essential requirements to run a small pub business! The Wych Elm was our local and when the previous landlord retired 4 years ago we took on the tenancy to keep the pub at the heart of our local North Kingston community. We had previously been at the Canbury Arms from 2005 until April 2018.
2) What do you love about running your own independent business?
We love the fact that we are hands on and able to provide a very personal service whether it’s serving a pint and having a chat with the old gentleman from the local sheltered housing, providing a freshly prepared meal to a family of 4, to showing Saturday afternoon rugby with a sports bar full of cheery supporters, or writing and hosting a fundraising quiz for a local school – one size does not fit all we treat everyone as an individual!
3) What is your favourite dish you serve?
A favourite dish is our tasty Sunday roast – beef or pork with a Yorkshire pud paired with a lovely glass of our Argentinian San Felipe Malbec.
4) Let’s spread the indie love, name some other independent businesses you support.
We LOVE Charlotte Dean at Wined Up Here in Norbiton. She is an indie wine merchant with a fabulous selection of unusual and interesting wines, beers, spirits and cheese! She has a monthly wine tasting here at the pub with a meal provided by our kitchen £25 per head with 8 wines and a meal – we’re sold out every time! Also Justine Elton at Sartorial Boutique and gift shop also in Norbiton, great for cards, gifts and some clothing.
5) Which is your favourite social media platform and why?
For me Instagram is the platform I’m most comfortable with, my background as a graphic designer is all about creating a simple image that can communicate a message quickly, less is so often more.
Thanks to Charlotte for taking part and do let me know if you stop in! Please continue to support your local independents by using the hashtag #incredibleindependents#incredibleindependents and tell me why you love them!
